Obituary for Ms. Georgia Underwood Memorial services for Carthage native, Georgia Lou Underwood, 75, will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church of Carthage with Rev. Leah Morales officiating. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Hawthorn Funeral Home. Her ashes will be lain to rest in Fite Cemetery. Georgia Lou Underwood was born June 19, 1944 in Carthage, Texas. She passed this life June 14, 2020 in Tyler, Texas. Georgia was the only child born to the marriage of George Edward “Buddy” and Mary Louise Fite Underwood. Georgia’s birth came just months after her fathers’ plane was shot down during WWII. Georgia, graduated with the Bulldog class of 1962, she was a voracious reader, loved knowledge and the pursuit of education. Georgia’s educational path flowed through Panola Junior College, Centenary College, Stephen F. Austin State University, Greenbriar College for Women in Virginia, Louisiana State University, and the University of Texas, obtaining her master’s in history. Georgia studied archaeology and was blessed to travel internationally studying and soaking in other cultures, religions and customs. Georgia was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Carthage. Her community and civic mindedness lead to her serve in the Service League of Carthage supporting the Sammy Brown Library, the Panola County Historical and Genealogical Society as well as her membership in both the Epsilon Tau chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Carthage Book Forum. She is also preceded in death by her beloved mother, Louise LeBlanc and stepfather, Jesse LeBlanc. Ms. Underwood is survived by her son, Mark Sinclair of Carthage; granddaughters, Carley Louise Page of Utah, and Chesley Jade Burke of Tyler; cousin, Lynn Hines of Tyler; many other relatives and a host of friends.
