She was born on January 7, 1908 in Senice, Province of Moravia, Czechoslovakia, to Frank and Marie (Kurtin) Michalek. In 1910 the Michalek family left Czechoslovakia for America and the journey across the Atlantic Ocean took two months. After landing in Galveston, they traveled to Granger where they would be engaged in farming. On August 12, 1930 she married John F. Knapek. He preceded her in death in 1986. She was a member of the SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Granger, the KJZT and St. Flora's Altar Society. She was the oldest alumnus of SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic School. She dearly loved the Lord, family and friends. She had a deep devotion to the Mother of God and was a promoter of the Miraculous Medal. She was blessed with many talents and delighted in making quilts and crocheting doilies, many of which she donated to church raffles and auctions. She was also a wonderful cook, and baking homemade bread and kolaches was a regular routine. Being an avid gardener, she spend many hours canning and freezing produce from her garden. Her beautiful flower garden and potted plants were a reflection of her love for God s creation. She was generous and all will miss her unselfish love and caring heart.
