Johnny Adolph Knapek, 72, of Granger died Monday, July 21, 2003 at his home. A rosary will be recited at 7 pm, Wednesday at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Celebration of Life Mass will be 10 am, Thursday, July 24, 2003 at SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Granger with Rev. Joseph Nisari and Msgr. John Frizzell officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Granger. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Vista Care Hospice, 819 S. 5th St., Temple, TX. 76504. Pallbearers are Alan Huf, Jason Huf, Thomas Huf, James Huf, Aaron Knapek, Jacob Knapek, Bobby Polasek, Ernest Valdez, Leonard Huf, Randall Unnasch, Andrew Huf and Brian Polasek. Honorary pallbearers are Raymond Knapek, Anthony Knapek, John Unnasch, Ernie Valdez and Nathan Huff. Johnny was born on July 11, 1931 to John F. and Mary Ann (Michalek) Knapek at Possum Creek, west of Granger. He attended SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic School after which he stayed home to help out with the family farming. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an Airman 3rd Class until September 29, 1953, when he received an Honorable Discharge due to an injury. On January 18, 1955, he married Antonia Havelka at Holy Trinity Church in Corn Hill, Texas. He was a farmer and rancher all his life. Johnny was also a talented musician and vocalist. He began this career by playing his guitar with his sister, Mary Ann. Their performances were broadcast on KTAE and they were also hired to play for weddings. Johnny played with several polka bands during his lifetime. These included Frank Zurovetz, Louis Steffek, Frank Vrana, and the Fabulous Six Band with Fritz Hodde for 30 years. At one point, he even did some migrant work in West, Texas. He was a member of the KJT, the Knights of Columbus, and SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish in Granger. Hobbies he enjoyed were gardening, shelling pecans, and watching his grandchildren play. Johnny was preceded in death by his infant children, Joseph Anthony Knapek and Frances Ann Knapek; his father, John F. Knapek; and his sister, Alice Knapek. Survivors include his mother, Mary Ann Knapek of Taylor; his wife, Antonia Knapek of Granger; son, Raymond Knapek and wife Kimberly of Thorndale; daughter, Lillie Huf and husband, Leonard of Granger; son, Anthony Knapek of Granger; daughter, Theresa Valdez and husband Ernest Valdez of Holland; daughter, Rose Unnasch and husband Randall of Thorndale and daughter, Patricia Polasek and husband Bobby of Taylor; a sister, Mary Ann Strmiska of Granger; four brothers, Frank Knapek and wife Della Mae of Thrall, Louis Knapek and wife Blanche of Thrall, George Knapek and wife Linda of Taylor, Joe Knapek and wife Virginia of Taylor; sixteen grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
