Bio

Iona Fay Bristol, 92, of Burwell, Nebraska died September 25, 2018 at the Community Memorial Health Center. Iona was born July 12, 1926 at St. Michael, Nebraska to John and Katherine (Hetrick) Fieldgrove. She grew up in Buffalo County near St. Michael. She went through the 8th grade at school and then the 9th and 10th grade by correspondence. Iona married Rupert Bristol on July 10, 1951 in Las Vegas, Nevada. After Rupert was honorably discharged from the Army they lived in the Ansley area, while farming and ranching with his family. In 1971 they moved to Loup County where the Calamus Lake is now. During the lake development they moved to their place north of the lake, where they continued to ranch. After their house fire in 2011 they moved into Burwell. Rupert died on October 14, 2012. Iona was an accomplished horse woman, having won many awards in barrel racing and as an active member of the Muddy Creek Saddle Club. She also enjoyed raising goats, hunting, fishing, playing softball and was active in the Calamus Lake Residences Association. Her nieces and nephews often referred to her as ‘the fun aunt’. Iona is survived by two daughters, Jeanne and Steven Mueller of Cambridge, Nebraska and Nancy Ann Bristol of Sydney, Australia. One grandson, Jim and Natasha Mueller of Kanarado, Kansas and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Iona Mueller and William Rupert Mueller. Her sister-in-law Julia Fieldgrove of Litchfield and many nieces and nephews. Iona was preceded in death by her parents and husband as well as her brothers and sisters, Amos, Olive, John Jr, Katherine, Lorraine, Henry, Allan, Calvin, Ester, Sherman and Franklin . Iona’s wishes were to donate her body to science.
