Sherman Arthur “Mert” Fieldgrove, 78, of Litchfield, peacefully passed away Friday, June 30, 2017, surrounded by his family at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney after a long battle of health issues. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Litchfield. The Rev. Jim Koontz will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Litchfield Cemetery. Rasmussen Funeral Home in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements. Mert Fieldgrove was born May 8, 1939, in the St. Michael-Sodtown area to John H. and Katherine (Hetrick) Fieldgrove Sr. He attended schools in the St. Michael-Sodtown and Ravenna area. He married Julia Herfel on March 20, 1960, in Litchfield. They made their home in Litchfield. He started driving truck for Harry Haller in 1957 and became an owner/operator on August 15, 1963, continuing be an owner/operator until 2005. He also drove trucks for several companies, including Whitney Sand and Gravel in Kearney. Mert, who as also known as Flapjack, helped his wife in the Eastside Café from May 1975 to 1998. Survivors include his wife, Julia of Litchfield; a daughter, Brenda Wallace of Yermo, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Iona Bristol of Burwell. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, LaVon Fieldgrove; and his brothers and sisters, Amos, Olive, John Jr., Katherine, Lorraine, Henry, Allan, Calvin, Ester and Franklin.
