BURNS RICHARDS 1913-2001 Billy Burns Richards, 88, Independence, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at St. Joseph Health Center. Mr. Richards was born April 11, 1913, in Valley Mills, Bosque County, Texas, the son of Henry Richards and Emma E, McWilliams. His great-grandfather, William B. Richards, fought with Sam Houston in the Battle of San Jacinto. He married Lucille Margaret Schuster on June 28, 1939, who preceded him in death on April 23, 1993. One of 13 family members to serve in World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio operator I the pacific, the southern Philippines, New Guinea, Northern Solomons, Ryukyus and Luzon. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Distinguished Unit Badge. Upon returning from the war, he joined Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. as a PBX installer. He helped maintain the switchboards in the Muehlebach Hotel during President Truman's visits and installed the communication equipment in the Alameda Hotel, necessary for President Ford during the 1976 Republican Convention in Kansas City. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and every September, he had a annual fishing trip to Kenora, Ontario. He was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 21 and the Telephone Pioneers of America. His survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and David Sperry, Independence; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Florence Richards, Springdale, Ark; a sister and brother-in-law, Alleen and Robert Hogg, Searcy, Ark; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday ay t the Speaks Suburban Chapel.
