Bio

Funeral services for Hazel Jay Handley, 88, of Clifton, were held Wednesday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m., at First United Methodist Church in Clifton, with the Rev. Robert Cavanaugh officiating. Burial followed at 2 p.m. in Gorman. Hazel Jay Handley was born on Oct. 14, 1907, to William Henry and Emma Eugenia McWilliams Richards in the Cayote Community. She attended the Cayote schools and was a graduate of Valley Mills High School. On October 31, 1927, she married E.R. "Buck" Jay and lived in West Texas and Pampa prior to his death in November 1947. They had two daughters and an infant son who died at birth. In Pampa, Handley was active in civic affairs and served as president of Business and Professional Women. Later she moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where she was residence director of the Young Women's Christian Association. In January 1969, she moved back to Bosque County and married Clarence Handley, Sr. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Clifton Civic Improvement Society. She was proceeded in death by both her husbands; an infant son; a step-son, T.C. Handley and his wife, Evelyn; a step-grandson, Jack Handley, his wife Laura, and their infant son, Eric; and a son-in-law, Douglas Evans. Handley is survived by two daughters, Gloria Jay Evans of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Wanda Jay "Amanda" Campbell of Austin; a step-son, Clarence and Nell Handley, Jr. of Valley Mills; sister-in-law, Leone Hyles of Clifton; two sisters, Aubra McMillan of Levelland and Bob and Aileen Hogg of Searcy, Ark., two brothers, Burns Richards of Independence, Mo., and James and Florence Richards of Harrison, Ark.; grandchildren, John and Mary Jay Hancock of Fort Worth, Bill and Linda Campbell of Austin, Julia Anne Jay Campbell of Austin, Jay Evans of Minneapolis, Minn., Jill Evans of Austin, John and Mary Campbell of Baltimore, MD., and Jeff and Yasmin Evans of Austin; step-grandchildren, Keith and Melissa Handley of Amherst, Mass., Phillip and Terry Handley Patton of Chesness, S.C., Joe and Marifred Handley and children of Hobbs, N.M., and Don Handley and family; four great-granddaughters; nine great-grandsons; a great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Mike Hyles of Clifton, Joe and Ed Moorman of Meridian, and Bill and Joyce Eaton of Waco. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or the Goodall-Witcher Nursing Facility, attention Raymond Zuehike.
