Bio

AURORA — Lawrence E. "Curly" Penner, 95, of Aurora passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018, at Memorial Community Care. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Aurora United Methodist Church. Pastor Michelle Reed will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Lawrence E. "Curly" Penner, the son of Fred W. and Genevieve (Austin) Penner, was born in Stockham on Feb. 9, 1923, and passed away in Aurora on Dec. 5, 2018, at the age of 95. He grew up in Stockham where he attended school. Curly then served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Fullerton and Scottsbluff before his enlistment. Curly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps from December of 1942 until his discharge on Dec. 31, 1945. On June 29, 1943, he was united in marriage to Betty Applegate at Miami, Fla. They lived their entire married life in Aurora where Curly was an automobile salesman. Betty passed away on Dec. 4, 2005. Curly was a longtime member of the Aurora United Methodist Church. He served on the Aurora City Council for many years and was a longtime member of the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department where he served in many capacities. He enjoyed gardening, following Aurora High School sports, and watching University of Nebraska Football. Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Keith (Judy) Penner of Aurora and Dr. Gary (Carol) Penner of Fairfax, Va.; four grandchildren, Tom (Susan) Penner of Aurora, Doug (Shari) Penner of Aurora, David (Karen) Penner of Raleigh, N.C., and Samantha (Ken) Massey of Waynesboro, Pa.; and eight great-grandchildren, Jacob, Max, Kendal, Marshal, Nolan and Fiona and Alex (Jen) Heiden and Aaron (Tara) Heiden. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Elaine Penner and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife; grandson, Deon K. Penner; sisters, Dorothy (Marion) Newlun, Thelma (Dale) Fenster and Anna (Maurice) Medaris; brothers, LeRoy "Fritz" (Gwen) Penner, Ernest (Fern) Penner and Melvin Penner; and sister-in-law, Marion (Jerry) Jones.
