Bio

William Q. Davis and Eliza Jane Sibert were married Nov. 10, 1831, in Bartholomew Co., Indiana. Atlas of Bartholomew County, Indiana J.H. Beers & Co., 1879 p. 67 W.Q. Davis was born in Beaufort Co., N.C., Aug. 9, 1812. Driven from his home by the injustice of his stepfather at the early age of 15, he came all the way on foot from North Carolina to Bartholomew Co., and settled here in 1827; he started out with only 37 1/2 cents in his pocket; at that early age he conceived a desire to do something for himself, which, in after years, fully developed; he commenced work for Solomon Stout, making rails at 25 cents per hundred; he afterward hired out to Mr. Stout for one year for $50; the next year he worked for Benjamin Barker and received $58, of which he put at interest $50. He was married on the 10th of November, 1831, to Eliza Jane Sibert, and by her had twelve children--Jacob, Joel Stanton, John H. (deceased), Benjamin Franklin (deceased), William H., Sallie J. (deceased), Isaac W. (deceased), Mary E., Eliza K. (deceased), Rebecca J., Lou and Fremont. Attention to business and adhering to his early determination, he rapidly accumulated a handsome property, and surrounded himself and family with the comforts of life. In all business transactions, he was honest and honorable, never allowing a debt to go unpaid, and generally paying them before maturity. Politically he was an Old Line Whig. In raising a family, he was equally successful and it is a fact worthy of mention that none of his family were ever known to use intoxicating drinks, smoke, or chew tobacco, or play a game of cards. Three of his sons were in the late war, all old enough to go at that time; one was killed at the battle of Stone River. Mr. Davis died on the 25th of November, 1873, at the age of 61 years, lamented by his family and a large circle of family and acquaintances. Mrs. Davis, the daughter of John and Sarah Sibert, was united in matrimony with Mr. Davis at the age of 15, and proved a loving and worthy wife, assisting largely in all the successes of his life. Now, at the age of 64, she is hale and hearty, and is living on the old home place, her years made pleasant by her children; she bids fair to enjoy many years of life.
