The Evening Republican Columbus, Indiana Thursday, Feb. 20, 1913 Joel S. Davis died at his home on California street this morning at 5:30 o'clock. Death ended a long illness, which extended over a period of five years, the last four months of which Mr. Davis was confined wholly to his bed. He had waited patiently for death to come and often expressed a wonder why it was so long delayed. Death was due to disease of the liver and bowels, and the suffering of the patient was very great at times. Mr. Davis was one of the most prominent citizens of the county and city, and was very widely known. He was 78 years of age last August and by his removal death has this winter claimed a trio of some of the most well known men born in Sandcreek township, the other two being Daniel Day and John Thomas, both of whom answered the call earlier in the winter. Mr. Davis realized that himself and his two old neighbors were all near the shadow and often lightly remarked about the grim race to meet death that all were running. Mr. Day was the first to die and on that occasion Mr. Davis remarked that "he had won the first heat." Joel S. Davis was born in Sandcreek township, this county, in the year 1834. His father was William Q. Davis, familiarly called "Quaker Bill," and was a native of North Carolina. His mother, before her marriage, was Miss Eliza J. Sibert and was a native of Sandcreek township. To this union twelve children were born and since the death of Joel S. Davis only three of the family survive. The two surviving brothers are William H. Davis, of Indianapolis, and Fremont Davis, of this city. One sister,. Mrs. Lou Reynolds Weithoff, also lives here. On February 25, 1854, Joel S. Davis was married to Miss Margaret Walker, of Hamilton county, O. Six children were born to this union, but only one now survives, this being Mrs. Ida Clark, of this city. The husband and wife were separated in 1884, when death removed Mrs. Davis. In 1897 the deceased was married to Miss Emily Newsom, of Sandcreek township, but no children were born to them. She survives her husband. The deceased is also survived by two grandchildren, Leonard Clark, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Ora Shadduck, of this city. Mr. Davis was a farmer in his earlier life and resided in Sandcreek township. At that place he served his township as trustee for three or four terms, being elected to that office on the republican ticket, which political faith he has always firmly adhered to through all the years of his long life. For over forty years he had been a member of the Quaker church in Sandcreek township and always strongly held to the doctrines of that faith. At one time Mr. Davis served the republican party in this county as county chairman and always performed his duties with satisfaction to all concerned. He was a man who was well informed in many lines and his knowledge was broad, even outside of his own work. From the year 1893 to 1894 Mr. Davis served this city in the official position of water works trustee. The funeral arrangements were not completed today and will be announced later. Friday, Feb. 21, 1913 Funeral of Joel S. Davis. The funeral services over the remains of Joel S. Davis, who died at his home on California street in this city yesterday morning, will be held Sunday afternoon. The funeral cortege will leave the residence in this city at 1 o'clock in the afternoon and will proceed to the New Harmony church in Sandcreek township, and is expected to arrive there about 2:30 o'clock, where the obsequies will be conducted by Mrs. Joseph Cox, of this city. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery. Columbus Grange will attend the funeral in a body and the ritualistic service will be given at the grave.
