Abraham was born 4 September 1796 in Laurens District, South Carolina. Son of George Wright III and Eaditha Shirley Wright. He is the great great grandson of George Bowman and Maria Elizabetha Heydt Bowman; the great grandson of George Wright and Sarah Bowman Wright; and the second great grandson of Johann "Hans"Justus Heydt and Anna Maria Merckle Heydt, the first settlers of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. The Heydt's and Merckle's immigrated from Bonfeld, Neckarland, Baden Wurttenberg, Germany in 1709, settling first along the Hudson River in New York, then near Schanksville, Pennsylvania, before finally settling in Virginia. Abraham married "Anna" Burtz, daughter of Frederick Burtz and Rachel Inman Burtz, April 16, 1820 in Laurens Co., South Carolina. Anna was born May 4, 1797 in the Laurens District, South Carolina. Her father, Frederick Burtz was from the Lower Saxony area of Germany and her mother, Rachel Inman was of English descent. Abraham came from Laurens County, South Carolina settling first in Fayette County and then Meriwether County, Georgia with his brother, John, between 1825 - 1828. They were living in Meriwether County by 1828, Abraham on land adjoining the Flat Rock Primitive Baptist Church near Greenville while John settled at Chalybeate Springs. Abraham and Anna were the parents of nine children. Abraham was both a farmer and a teacher. Anna died November 8, 1854 and Abraham on November 9, 1858. Both are buried in the Flat Rock Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Greenville in Meriwether County, Georgia. Their graves are the oldest in the cemetery. Abraham and son, George Washington Wright, are thought to have donated their land for the church and cemetery. Their home were located nearby. There are four unmarked graves in one row and then three unmarked in the row behind. All of these graves are of the same type made out of solid slabs of rock cut and placed on each side and one slab on top in an above ground box type arrangement. These slabs appear to all have been hand cut and are approximately one foot thick. Three graves, those of Abraham, Anna and Eliza Jane Wright, have inscriptions on the top slab stone. Eliza Jane Wright was the young granddaughter of Abraham, daughter of his son, George Washington Wright. While the other graves are unmarked, it is known in the family that George Washington Wright and his wife Eliza Jane Gresham Wright are buried beside their daughter Eliza Jane. It is very probable that another of these graves is that of Eaditha Shirley Wright, mother of Abraham. Another son, Abraham B. Wright, who died in the Civil War in Virginia and whose body was returned to Georgia for burial, is probably the last unmarked Wright Grave. His tombstone reads: In Memory Of Abraham Wright Born Sept 4th A.D. 1796 Died Nov 9th A.D. 1838 Aged 62 years 2 months and 5 days Inscription: Come hither ye friends, brethren and children dear, Behold your kind friend, brother and father, near beneath this in calm repose his body lies, while his soul sings redemption beyond the skies.
