Bio

Abraham B. Wright was the son of Abraham Wright and Anna Burtz. He was born on the seventeenth day of February in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and thirty-two, in Meriwether Co., Georgia, near the current town of Greenville. His ancestry is German and English in orgin. It is possible his middle name may have been Bowman. His great grandmother was Sarah Bowman Wright and many of her male descendants carry the Bowman name as their middle name. Abraham B. Wright was the 2nd great grandson of Jost (Yost) Hite (Heydt) who was an early German settler of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in about 1740. Abraham enlisted as a Confederate Soldier, 51st Georgia Infantry, Company E, First Sergeant May 4th 1862 at Calhoun, Georgia. He died while riding in a railroad car near Lynchburg, Virginia as a 1st Sgt, November 1, 1862, after being released on furlough from the Odd Fellows Hall which was being used as a Confederate Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. It was located at 5th and Broad Streets. Orginally interred within the confederate section Old City (Methodist) Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia. His brother, Young Federick Wright had the body exhumed and shipped to Grantville, Georgia. Young paid the cost of $20.00. Grantville is today only 22 miles from Greenville where the Wright family lived. Many of the Wright family members are buried at the Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery for which Abraham Wright Senior donated land. Grantville was a town listed as being accessible via the Confederate Railroad. I would imagine Young F. Wright had his brother's remains shipped to Grantville which was the nearest town to Greenville that was on the Confederate Railroad. As there are a number of unmarked graves with the marked Wright graves, one of the unmarked graves is probably Abraham B. Wright. - - - The Diuguid Records, 1861-1865 Biographical Sketches By Jerald H. Markham Pages 310 and 311 Wright, Abraham B., 1st Sgt. - 51st Georgia Inf., Compay E., d. 11/01/62 @ Odd Fellow's Hall. Coffin size was 75 in. in length by 18 in. in width. Orginally buried in lot #182 grave #1, row #3. Body was exhumed 11/22/62, prepared and shipped to Grantville, Georgia. The brother of the deceased, Young F. Wright paid, "for removal & packing brothers remains." The cost was $20.00, paid in full by cash. Enlisted as 1st Sgt. 3/04/62 (born in 1833). NOTE: Allen Crowder of Jordan's Battery, Virginia Light Art., was buried in that location 11/22/62.
