Bio

Walter Vernon Lewis, 92, of Eastland, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at the Eastland Memorial Hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Daugherty St. Church of Christ with Jim Cox of Breckenridge officiating. Burial will be in the Eastland City Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Mr. Lewis was born on April 2, 1915 at Corinth, in Eastland County, to William Henry Newton and Mary Ellen (Elliott) Lewis. He grew up working on the family farm. He married Doris Nelms on June 17, 1939, who preceded him in death. He worked for a wholesale distribution company, later moving to Ft. Worth and working for a defense contractor. Upon his retirement he moved to Eastland and began working for a gas plant. In 1968 he moved to Breckenridge and worked as a machinist for R. E. Dye, retiring at the age of 70. He enjoyed wood working, working with machinery and taking vacations. He was a member of the Elliott St. Church of Christ and taught Bible Class. He was preceded in death 3 sisters and 4 brothers. Survivors include: 4 children, Phillip Lewis and wife, Marilyn of Edmond, OK., Jan Clary and husband, Cliff of Cisco, Mike Lewis and wife, Sharon of Eastland, Kay Westbrook and husband, Jim of Kerrville; 6 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
