On May 16, 2018, Geraldine G. Kubin Nekuza, 86, passed away peacefully in Cedar Park, Texas, with her family at her side. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Geraldine was born in Rice, Texas, to the late John F. and Rosie Zajic Kubin, the seventh of eight children born into the Czech family. Her baptism began her life-long membership of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. At birth, she was given the name Jaromira Jirina Kubin. She said that her grade school teacher changed it when she had difficulty pronouncing her Czech name. From then on, she was known as Geraldine. Her family later moved to Ennis where she graduated from Ennis High School, class of 1949. On April 19, 1952, Geri married her sweetheart, Jodie George Nekuza in a beautiful ceremony at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. She and Jodie led by example in their marriage, showing that life should be enjoyed. During their younger days, they could be found dancing most Saturday nights, and later in life, they were a model of strength, compassion, and faith. As a young married woman, Geri worked as a seamstress with Storey Manufacturing. There she discovered a passion for sewing and honed skills she would use throughout her life. Geri was a devout Catholic and servant leader of the Lord. She gave her time and talents in many ways. She later ran the cafeteria at St. John’s Catholic School. Even today, St. John students have fond memories of her home cooking. In keeping with her servant's heart, Geri joined the Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas - K.J.Z.T in 1952. She was an active field worker for the Fraternal for two years before serving as President of her Society No.16-Ennis from 1970-1974. She was elected as State Director of the Fraternal in 1978 and served for 15 years. After a year as Vice President, Geri was appointed as the 6th State President of the K.J.Z.T. in 1993. Her husband Jodie showed his support by encouraging her to “make her mark on history”. She served as a humble and respected President of the Fraternal for 12 years. Of the many projects she was involved with during that time, she was most proud of her work with the video documentary Painted Churches of Texas - Echoes of the Homeland. Through this project, she was an integral part of visually documenting the history of Texas’ Painted Churches. She also had a special place in her heart for the Society quilt. This project commemorated each of the 102 societies as individual quilt squares. The result of this labor of love was a beautiful piece of the Fraternal history which proudly hangs at the State Office in Austin. In her farewell message announcing her retirement, she said, “K.J.Z.T. is the heritage we have received from our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers. Let us pass on our heritage to our future generations”. Geri was known for her dry sense of humor, which caught many people off guard. It was often said that she had no idea how truly funny she was. She found simple pleasure in a hot cup of coffee and a “sweet bite”. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jodie, in 2006; siblings: Mildred Hubacek, John Kubin, Wilma Kasper, Ardrie Honza, Vlasta Knize, and Alvin Kubin; and sisters-in-law, Annie R. Salik and Antonie Kubin. Survivors include her daughters, Cindy Ann Brown and her husband, Gordy, of Austin, and Gina Lynn Roberts and her husband, Mike, of Houston; grandchildren: Whitney Koch and her husband, Baron, of Frisco, Jordan Brown and his wife, Jenny, of Leander, Meredith Wheeler and her husband, Drew, of Pearland, Allison Foster and her husband, Ryan, of Houston, and Will Roberts and his wife, Sabrina, of Midland; great-grandchildren: Bennett and Emery Koch, and Vivian and Faye Wheeler; sister, Adail Parma, of Ennis; sister-in-law, Geraldine Kubin, of Ennis; other relatives and many friends.
