Bio

Thomas Cassutt, age 84, of Ramona, entered into Eternal Rest on January 7, 2018. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30AM on Friday January 12, 2018 at St. William’s Catholic Church in Ramona with Father Chester Murtha & Father Bob Vinslauski as Co-Celebrants. The family will be present for the visitation from 5-7 PM on Thursday at Weiland Funeral Chapel followed by a prayer service at 7 PM. Burial will be in the St. Ann’s Cemetery, Badus Township. Military Honors provided by the Madison VFW, Madison American Legion and US Army Personnel. Thomas Casper Cassutt was born on January 21, 1933, on the family farm to Mathias and Marguerite (Metter) Cassutt. He attended country school. Tom was a hard worker starting various jobs at the age of 13 (shocking flax straw and digging potatoes in North Dakota). He joined the Army at 18, serving two years in Japan and six months in Korea during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, he came back to Ramona and farmed the homestead which was established in 1881. He married Frances Peck on November 1, 1955. Tom and Fran moved to Colorado to start their life, and after missing South Dakota, they returned home. He continued to live and work on the family farm, and he put on many miles while trucking for local farmers. Special times with their six children included afternoon fishing trips to Lake Herman, summer campfires with extended family and friends, playing cards, and Sunday afternoon picnics. Tom was honored with the Korean Medal of Freedom Award, the Century Farm Award, and Quasquicentennial Family Farm Award. He was a member of the Madison VFW. Thomas is survived by his children, Deborah (Steve) Sunde of Phoenix, AZ ; Douglas Cassutt of Bellevue, NE; Susan (James) Langner of Madison; Tom (Deb) Cassutt of Ramona; Lora (Philip) DeCurtins of Ramona; Jeannie (Shawn) Guymon, of New Ulm, MN; 14 grandchildren & 11 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Donna Brown, Helen Norman, Barb Kunovic, and John Cassutt. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Cassutt; parents, Mathias and Marguerite Cassutt, sisters: Francis Cassutt, Dorothy Whitethorn, Mary Slovak, Catherine Kraemer and Grandson Jacob Cassutt. - Weiland Funeral Chapel ∼ He is an Army veteran of the Korean War
