Parents: Willem Lammerts de Roos & Mintje Oepkes Vellinga Jan Willems' father was Willem Lammerts De Roos who was an innkeeper and barrel maker in Wommels, Friesland, The Netherlands. He did have a son, Tjitzo, and another son who died , leaving an orphan daughter, Gerbrig De Roos, and perhaps other children. Jan Willems'' first wife was Akke Baukes Seffinga but she left no children before she died. Jan Willems' second wife was Folketje Jans Krol (1820-1860). They had five children: Willem J.; Jan Willems Jr.; Dieuwke; Oepke and Mintje. Folkertje died shortly after the birth of Mintje. Folketje was evidently a woman of some means because later her children, Mintje and Oepke, received inheritances from her estate in Holland. Jan Willems' third wife was Akke Visser. They had three children born in the Netherlands: Tryntje (later to marry Theodore Feekes); Taekje (later to marry Jouke Mulder); Klaas who died of exposure after the hardships of the trip to Iowa. Their daughter, Anna, was born in America on April 16, 1874 (who later was married to Hulbert Remerde, then Yge Mulder, and then Jim Ver Hoef). Also living in the Jan Willems De Roos family for a time was his orphaned niece, Gerbrig De Roos, who was taken into their home at age 10 in 1843 until her marriage to D. P Noordman, a farmer at Oosterend, later at Scharnehousten.
