Sister Rita was known as Ludmila Kucera prior to joining the Notre Dame Sisters. Parents: Anton and Josephine Svoboda Kucera Brothers: Anton, Frank, Ludvik, Joseph, John, and Sisters: Mary Weverka, Frances Sloup and Anna Rech Sister Rita Kucera, a native to Brainard Nebraska joined the Notre Dame Sisters in 1918, eight years after they had come to the United States to serve to Czech immigrants. She was a pioneer in the staffing at the Hesson Orphanage in Fenton, Missouri. Sister had been assigned to care for the first five boys at Father Flanagan's Boys Home in Omaha. She experienced the difficulties involved in moving the home to the present location west of Omaha. Later she thought and Dwight, Brainard, Prague, Wahoo, Dodge, Omaha (Assumption and St. Adalbert's) schools and Chelsea, Iowa. In 1937 she was among the first Notre Dame Sister to enter missionary service among the Indian Children Of Our Lady of Lourdes Mission in South Dakota. She also spent a summer at the Indian Mission in Winnebago. After 57 years of service Sister Rita retired to the Notre Dame motherhouse and she assisted in household tasks and craft work until her sudden death at the age of 88 on November 17, 1986 at Immanuel Hospital. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.
