William Arch Romine, son of William T. and Susan C. Romine, was born in Nelson county, Kentucky, September 14, 1869, and died in McCook, Nebraska, Hospital, February 23, 1946, at the age of 76 years, 5 months and 9 days. In 1872 his parents and family moved from Kentucky to Illinois; in 1885 from Illinois to Wymore, Nebraska by train, and from Wymore to Hitchcock county by covered wagon, where they homesteaded west of Palisade. At the age of 23, he was united in marriage to Mary M. Powell at Hayes Center, Nebraska. He lived south of Hamlet for 40 years, and by hard work and good management, became a very successful farmer and stockman, retiring to Palisade four years ago. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Romine had the honor of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary on Aug. 3, 1943. Confessing his faith in the Saviour at an early age, he placed his membership in the Union Church of Hamlet, of which he continued to be a member until his death. He was a loving husband and father, leaving to mourn, his wife, Mary; five daughters, Mabel D. Bishop of Stockton, Calif., Blanche A. Richards of Palisade, Neva G. Sutton of Boulder, Colo., Wilma S. Ross of Stratton, and Thelma J. Harris of Palisade; twelve grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lon and Beauford, both of Palisade; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Hardy of Loveland, Colo., and Mrs. Robert Boswell of New Point, Mo. Preceding him in death were Wilbur E. Bishop, grandson, who gave his life in service of his country March 4, 1942; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Bush of Palisade, and Mrs. Dora Thomas of Littleton, Colo. Funeral services were conducted from the Hamlet Union church, Tuesday, February 26, 1946, at 2:30 p.m., for William A. Romine, popular and respected resident of Palisade, Nebraska, who died February 23, 1946. The Rev. Karl Zieman, former pastor of the church, conducted the services that led in prayer, and in the reading of the obituary and life and work of Mr. Romine. A quarter of Judge Ray C. Chase, Frank Graves, Claude Graves and Elmer Carpenter sang, "What a Friend to Have in Jesus," "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be," and "God Be With You." Pallbearers were Wayne Richards, a grandson; and Faye Boswell, Chas. Romine, Frank Hardy, Wayne Romine and Archie Bush, nephews. Attending the service from distant points were Mrs. Neva Sutton and Carole Gay of Boulder, Colo.; Mrs. O.J. Bishop of Stockton, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Schilling and Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Meinke of Denver; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Boswell and Mrs. and Mrs. Faye Boswell of New Point, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hardy of Loveland, Colo.; and Mrs. J.K. Powell, Stella Osmus, Mr. and Mrs. Esty Schaaf and Mrs. Ronald Browning, all of Wray, Colo. Somewhere, I Know Somewhere, I know, is a trail that is old I shall take when the sun turns its face Toward the Gold of the West, And the babble of voices shall cease in a whisper-- A joint benediction of peace; And the cares that I had all be dim and forgot Like an unspoken prayer at some dear, hallowed spot. "The Palisade Times," March 1, 1946
