Rolland Martin was born Jan. 31, 1918, on the family farm north of Elyria to John and Verna (Kusek) Zulkoski. He was raised on the farm and received his education at District 32 country school. He helped with the farm work until April 1937, when he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was in Nebraska for a year, then transferred to Priest Lake, Idaho, to fight forest fires and later to Oregon to construct irrigation ditches. Rolland returned to the farm in November 1941, when he entered the United States Army. While in the Army he was stationed in the U.S., then sent to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. He was an ambulance driver and was captured in a trap in January 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge. After his release, the troop went on to Berlin. Following his discharge from the Army in October 1945, he returned home and purchased the family farmstead north of Elyria, where he farmed until his retirement in 1983. On Feb. 26, 1952, he was united in marriage to Dorothy (Jorgensen) Nevrkla at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Grand Island. The couple made their home on the farm. Dorothy passed away on March 4, 2015. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of the American Legion and Elyria Lions Club. Rolland served on the Elyria School Board and Elyria Township Association. He enjoyed music, square dancing, playing cards and spending time with his family. Survivors include a son, Paul of Elyria; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Casey Doggett of Berwyn and Joan and Chris Muffly of Niwot, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Diane (Mrs. Donnie) Nevrkla of Ord; a brother, Edmund Zulkoski of Ord; a sister, Larraine Pfeifer of Omaha; a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Ina Fae and Eugene Novak and Gene Novotny, all of Ord; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
