Lafayette nickname - Uncle Briggs spouse - 17314497 Lucy Montgomery The Wellington Leader February 25, 1932 Marcus D. Lafayette Montgomery was born in Anderson County, Texas on November 19, 1847. Later he moved to Ellis County. He was married to Miss Lucy Jane Chandler on October 14, 1880. He and his faithful wife moved to Collingsworth County in the fall of 1906 and settled in the Plymouth community where he engaged in the stock farming business. He came to this county before railroads or automobiles were known, and he and his wife struggled through the hardships of the early days with a fortitude which provided for their old age comfort. "Uncle Briggs" was a man of distinct personality, and was recognized as a leader in his community for many years. He was interested in the constructive development of his county, and could be depended upon to take a firm stand on any question in which he believed the welfare of the people was involved. He belonged to the breed of old timers whose word was a good as their bond. He was a faithful member of the Baptist Chruch for over 50 years. He is survived by his wife and seven children, thirty-one grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren. -------------------------
