Decklyn Nelson was the oldest son of Walter L. and Gladys E.(HACKETT) Nelson. He was enlisted in the Army during WWII. Astride a horse an expert A cowman through and through But he had greater virtues Like being Noble, proud and true He had a quiet dignity His manner calm, serene In every sense a gentleman His sense of humor keen His pride was in his family Whose ties with God are real He knew their faith would see them Through whatever life might deal This greatest Christian Cowboy Led his life without disguise He loved and was loved by both man & God Without having to compromise Written by Decklyn's good friend, Bob Moreland, April 1985 NEWSPAPER OBITUARY: The Gordon Journal, Gordon, NE, May 1, 1985, Page 14 Decklyn Lessly (Leslie) Nelson was born May 6, 1926 to Walter and Gladys Nelson at Burwell. He was educated at Mayflower school and at age 12 accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. He was baptized in the Loup river. He spent two years in the armed forces during World War II. He married Louese Bethene Flock on June 1, 1952. To this union were born Casey Decklyn and Cary Todd Nelson. Decklyn was known for his quiet, kind nature. He helped lead many people to the Lord. His home was always open to friends and strangers alike. Decklyn loved working with horses and spent his lifetime on ranches. Decklyn and Louese helped found the Baptist church in Ord, the Erina Sunday school, the Berean Fundamental church of Burwell, the Gordon Baptist church, the Country Hills Fellowship of Clinton and the Sandhills Intercessors. He was a faithful deacon and Sunday school teacher. He had no greater joy than serving his Lord. Decklyn died on April 25, 1985. Preceding him in death were his father Walter, brothers, Elwood and Blaine. Family members who remain include: his wife Louese, his mother, Gladys Nelson of Burwell, sons Casey and Cary, daughter-in-law Janice, three grandchildren, Walter, Delacia and Kathryn Nelson; sisters, Loryne Fitzgibbons, Lincoln; Joyce Helmkamp, Beaver City, OR and Zenn Thompson, Joy Guggenmos and Aleta Lowry of Burwell, numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
