Bio

"Blaine Nelson, 23, Killed in Accident; Rites Here Monday" Funeral services were held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Church in Burwell for Blaine H. Nelson, 23, who lost his life in a tragic accident, Thursday, Oct 16. Mr. Nelson, a Blaine County road maintenance employee, was killed about 3:30 p.m. at the Gerald DeGroff ranch west of Brewster [NE]. He was driving a county dump truck and had brought the truck, which was half filled with gravel, to the DeGroff ranch for repair. The box had been raised and braced with a timber, and in the course of repair, the timber apparently slipped and Mr. Nelson was killed instantly when the box fell on him. A Burwell native and graduate of Burwell High School, Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Darlene, and two-year-old daughter, Lisa. Interment was in the Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell. Blaine Hughes Nelson, youngest child of Walter and Gladys Nelson, was born May 1, 1946, at Burwell. At an early age he was baptized and later became a member of the Christian Church. He attended schools in Garfield County until 1957, when the family moved to Burwell, where he finished his high school education. He worked on a ranch several summers and after high school went into construction work. On February 6, 1965, he was united in marriage to Darlene Lewis at Taylor, Nebr. To this couple one child, Lisa Lynn, was born January 20, 1967. Blaine continued construction work until September of 1969, when they moved near Brewster, where he was employed as a grader operator for Blaine County at the time of his death. Blaine loved nature and sports, and most of all, his gun hobby, from which he derived much enjoyment.
