Bio

Gladys Evelyn Hackett Nelson, eldest daughter of Ira and Ella (Campbell) Hackett, was born at Page, Nebraska, on March 10, 1907, and died at Ord, Nebraska, on November 30, 1992, at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 20 days. She moved from Page to a farm 9 miles north of Burwell with her family in the spring of 1912. Gladys attended Gold Standard school through the 8th grade. Through her growing up years, many hours were spend in the fields working with her Dad. She always felt it was a good home life with much work, but time for fun too. The time they spent in Sunday School and Church, with her mother teaching and serving the Lord, was a great influence in Gladys' life. She accepted Christ as her saviour at an early age, was baptized, and remained faithful to him throughout her life. On September 25, 1925, at Pierce, Nebraska, she was united in marriage to Walter Nelson of Burwell. The couple farmed for 32 years on several farms north of Burwell. They retired and moved to Burwell in 1957. To this union eleven children were born. Gladys was a faithful member of the Community Christian Church. Her life was filled with helping others and each step she took was not for self praise, but to glorify her Lord. Like the stars in heaven and the lillies in the field, perfectly, simply and unaffectedly. Survivors include her daughters: Mrs. Lowell (Zenn) Thompson, Mrs. Edwin (Loryne) Fitzgibbons, Joyce Helmkamp, Mrs. James (Aleta) Lowery and Mrs. Raymond (Joy) Guggenmos. Other relatives left include three daughters-in-law: Louese Moody, Irene Walker and Darlene Tetschner. Sons-in-law: Lowell Thompson, Edwin Fitzgibbons, James Lowery and Raymond Guggenmos. 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Two brothers: Floyd Hackett of Burwell and Leo Hackett of Torrington, Wyoming plus a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, Sons Decklyn, Elwood, Blaine, two infant boys, an infant daughter and four sisters. "O Could I tell, ye surely would believe it, O could I only say what I have seen! How should I tell or how can ye receive it, How, till He bringeth you where I have been?"
