Elwood Walter Nelson, better known as "Woody Nelson", was born July 16, 1927 to Walter and Gladys Nelson and passed on to his heavenly home on January 6, 1980 at the Burwell Community Hospital. Wood was joined in holy wedlock to Irene Boag on December 31, 1950 at Burwell. This union was blessed with three daughters: Mrs. Martin (Linda) Robbins of Burwell, Mrs. Blaine (Julie) Lowe, of Manhattan, Kansas and Tammy Nelson at home. Woody accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and was baptized on June 20, 1938. He was a charter member of the Community Christian Church. He served his country during the Korean War. Following his years in service Woody and Irene bought a place north of Burwell where they ranched. Woody had a great love of his animals and the land and taught his family to also have a love of nature, God's creation. Woody was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and was never happier than when he was surrounded by his whole family. He was preceded in death by his father Walter Nelson and brother Blaine Nelson. Left to mourn are his wife, Irene, children, Linda, Julie and Tammy; grand-children Melissa, Brenda and Matthew Robbins; sons-in-law, Marty Robbins, and Blaine Lowe, and future son-in-law Jerry Rowse, his mother, Gladys Nelson, brother, Decklyn and wife, Louese of Gordon, Nebraska, Mrs. Zenn Thompson and husband Lowell of Burwell, Mrs. Loryne Fitzgibbons and husband Edwin, of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mrs. Joyce Helmkamp and husband Darrel of Beaverton, Oregon, Mrs. Aleta Lowery and husband James and Mrs. Joy Guggenmos and husband Raymond of Burwell, numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of friends.
