In the early summer of 1944 Warrant Officer Ray, the Post Finance Officer, and Captain Stanley Sawicki, the Post Civilian Personnel Officer, were assigned the daunting task of closing Fort Clark. Ray faced a staggering duty. Throughout that long hot summer, convoy after convoy of two-and-a-half ton trucks were loaded with post, camp, and station property to be moved to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The date ordered for closing the fort was August 28th, 1944. As the day drew closer the only soldiers left were Jimmie Ray and Captain Sawicki. They agreed to stop playing the daily bugle calls, now on a record player, and considered not even putting up the flag but thought better of it. Fort Clark quietly and unceremoniously slipped into history and out of active service on August 28, 1944, when these last soldiers turned out the lights and departed. Mr. Ray realized his place in the history of Fort Clark when he spoke of those final days, he said, "… we just couldn't get everything done and had been ordered to leave," he almost felt guilty. After his retirement from the Army, CWO Ray spent his winters at Fort Clark each year until his passing.
