Bio

[The Owen-Lewis Cemetery consists of several graves on privately owned land. The nearby community, which was known as "Lem Switch" or "Latham Springs" in 1900, no longer exists. At that time the land was the "Briggs Owen" farm and the first adult burial was Briggs Owen's wife, Nancy (Lewis) Owen. Nancy was the daughter of Jacob T. and Barbara C. Lewis who lived in the same area.] Jacob Lewis was the son of John and Charlotte (Quillin) Lewis and the husband of Barbara Caroline (Pegram) Lewis whom he married 28 Nov 1867 in Guilford Co., N.C. On 24 May 1861 Jacob, a North Carolina tobacco farmer, enlisted in Co. B, 1st N.C. Infantry, C.S.A. On 26 April 1862 his unit was reorganized as Co. B. 1st Battalion N.C. Sharpshooters. His unit participated in many of the battles of the War for Southern Independence. He was captured and imprisoned in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. then moved to Ft. Monroe, Va. and later exchanged and returned to his unit where he served until the end of the war. In 1867 he married Barbara Caroline Pegram (in 1874 his older brother James H. Lewis married her older sister Elmira). Jacob T. moved his family by train from N.C. to Arkansas about 1881 and lived there about a year before moving to Texas (by train) in 1883 where he purchased a farm in Eastland County near the Latham Springs community. Jacob T. and his wife are buried on the Eastland County farm near Lem Switch once owned by his daughter Nancy and her husband, Briggs Owen. The site is about 5 miles N.W. of the city of Eastland. The graves are on the north side of the railroad track. A chain-link fence and inscribed gravestones marked the site. Jacob's gravestone and Eastland County newspaper obituary list his birthdate as 9 Dec 1840, but some believe this is in error and that he was born one or two years earlier, others say he was born in 1841 but based on the 1880 Forsythe Co., N.C. census it seems 1839 or 40 is more likely.
