Son of James William Clay of Bethany, Harrison County, Missouri and Minnie May Amsberry of Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska. Husband of Bertha Isabel Hall of Round Valley, Custer County, Nebraska; married on 27 June 1928 in Valentine, Cherry County, Nebraska. "Lorin William Clay was born near Ansley, Nebraska to James William Clay and Minnie May (nee Amsberry) Clay, on May 22, 1903. He passed away at his home in Broken Bow, Nebraska at the age of 71 years, six months and eleven days. He grew to manhood in Custer County, Nebraska and attended grade school in the rural Cracker Box schoolhouse (west, southwest of Broken Bow), and he attended Broken Bow High School. On June 27, 1928, he was united in marriage at valentine, Nebraska to Bertha I. Hall. They were the parents of two daughters. They were engaged in farming in Custer County for several years. In 1940, the family moved to Blaine County, near Dunning, Nebraska. In 1946, they moved in to Broken Bow, Nebraska where he was employed as a carpenter until his retirement in the 1960's. Since retiring, when able to work, "Tootsie" as he was long known, built many items for his family and friends. He had acquired the nickname "Tootsie" when given to him bu his oldest granddaughter. All of his grand and great-grandchildren and many others affectionately called him "Tootsie".
