Husband of Minnie May Amsberry, married on 01 March 1900 in Broken Bow, Custer County, Nebraska. "Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Schneringer and Johnson Funeral Chapel. Music was furnished by a quartet of ladies consisting of Mrs. Seldon Wenquist, Mrs. Paul Collicott, Mrs. Allan Black and Mrs. Allie van Antwerp with Mrs. Cecil Brundige at the piano. Pallbearers we W.E. Robinson, Carl Holcomb, Clyde Arnold, George Dye, Charles Sloggett and L.F. Gremm. Interment was in the Broken Bow Cemetery. James William Clay, son of William H. and Mary E. Clay, was born at Bethany, Missouri on March 19th, 1875 and passed away at Broken Bow, Nebraska on April 28th, 1949, at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 9 days. At the age of 12 years he moved with his parents from Missouri to a farm near Ansley, where he grew to manhood. He attended Ansley and Algernon schools. He lived in Custer County the remainder of his life, except for a short interval in Colorado. He attended the Methodist Sunday School and Church and was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Ansley and since 1913 in Broken Bow. In his Faith and Fraternity, he was an ardent participant. On March 14th, 1900, he was united in marriage to Minnie M. Amsberry. Twelve children were born to this union, all of whom are living. Those surviving his passing are Esther of Anselmo, Nebraska; Mrs. Evelyn McCaslin and Mrs. Marjorie Myers of Broken Bow; Mrs. Myrtle Pittenger of Los Altos, California; Loren W., Gail and Ralph of Broken Bow; Harold of Anselmo, Warren of Merna, Donald of Filer, Idaho; Kenneth of Port Angeles, Washington; and Walter of Lebanon, Oregon. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Effie Draper of Albany, Oregon; a brother, Harry of Briceland, California; thirty-seven grandchildren and many other relatives."
