PLATTSMOUTH — Ernest Anton Coufal, 92, of Plattsmouth passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at John Knox Village in Lee Summit, Mo. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Palmer-Santin Funeral Home in Fullerton, with the Rev. Dale Coates officiating. Burial will be at Fullerton Cemetery, wwith military honors by American Legion Post 151 of Fullerton. Ernest was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Brainard, son of Ernest and Mary (Janousek) Coufal. He served in the United States Marine III Amphibious Corps in an engineer battalion on Okinawa, Guadalcanal and Northern China. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. He married Donna Bridger on Nov. 25, 1952, in Fullerton. He operated heavy equipment for Sides Construction in Omaha and eventually returned to Offutt AFB in civil service. He served as a member of the crew designated to keep the runways clear for the operation of the “Looking Glass” airplane that provided 24-hour security surveillance of the boundaries of the United States. Ernest enjoyed traveling, gardening, working on cars, Nebraska football, music, and dancing in his younger years. He is survived by his daughters, Lauren E. Arvin of Sioux City, Iowa, and Kerry S. Barkman of Blue Springs, Mo.; a sister, Elaine Tonniges of York; five grandchildren, Vince Barkman of Greenwood, Mo., Katie (Jerry) Merrill of Olathe, Kan., and David (Ingrid) Barkman of Blue Springs, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Lindcy and Titus; and multiple nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister, Vivian Behrns.
