Hancock Funeral Being Held Today Funeral services for J. E. Hancock, 64, will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Fundamental Baptist Church with the Rev. T. J. Sparkman, pastor of the Lamar Street Baptist Church, officiating. Mr. Hancock died unexpectedly at his home in the west part of Sweetwater Sunday. Heart ailment was blamed in his death. Surviving are his widow and nine children: Bonnie, Clara and Irene, who lived at home, Grady of Ft. Benning, Ga., Mrs. Raymond Mayhew and Mrs. O. M. Woodward of Hico, Mrs. D. E. Cooper of Sweetwater, Mrs. Joella Hair of Roscoe, and Mrs. Grace Cavitt of Sweetwater; and four grandchildren. Arrangements are in charge of an Abilene undertaker. From The Sweetwater Reporter , Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1943 *********** NOLAN COUNTY DEATH CERTIFICATE name: J. E. Hancock death date: 06 Feb 1943 death place: Sweetwater, Nolan, Texas cause of death: Possible cardiac thrombosis gender: Male race: White death age: 64 years 4 months 27 days birth date: 10 Sep 1878 birthplace: Alabama marital status: Married spouse's name: father's name: Bill [William M.] Hancock father's birthplace: Dk. mother's name: Lizzie Cook [This is his wife's name---his mother was Mary Jane Brock] mother's birthplace: Alabama occupation: place of residence: 908 W. 4th, Sweetwater, Nolan, Texas cemetery: burial place: Sweetwater, Texas burial date: 10 Feb 1943 informant: Mrs. J. E. Hancock, Sweetwater, Texas film number: 2137250 digital film number: 4030120 image number: 181 reference number: cn 9069 **************** There is confusion over Mr. Hancock's parents' names and wife's name. The following are results of my research (I am not related...just looking at Ancestry trees, death certificates, Find-a-Grave, census, etc.): PARENTAGE: * According to his death certificate, parents are Bill M. (William) Hancock (sometimes spelled Handcock) and Lizzie Cook . (Reminder that information on death certificate relies completely on knowledge of informant.) * Bill M. Hancock (1833-1909) * Son of Singleton Hancock and Mary Lindsey Lamb (1860 Jackson, Alabama census) * Married to Mary Jane Brock in 1873 in Alabama. * Social Security Death Index shows Mr. Joseph Edd Hancock as son of William Hancock and Mary J. Brock (proving parentage). * The 1880 Census for Jackson, Alabama, shows Joseph Handcock, age 3, with parents, William and Mary J. Hancock (proving parentage). * Children of Mary Jane Brock are all only linked to their mother on Find-a-Grave, not their father. (Unable to locate grave for William M. Hancock on Find-a-Grave). * William Bradbury Handcock, 1854-1940 * Born in Ohio, and son of Charles Handcock and Mary Elizabeth Bradbury (hence the Bradbury middle name). * Married 1st to Mary Lucy Antoinette Ware (1875 or 1881 in Dallas, TX) * Children with Lucy do not match siblings of Joseph Edd Hancock. * Married 2nd to Eliza Jane Cook in 1891 or 1896, also in Dallas, TX * Joseph Edd Hancock was born in Alabama...Mr. William Bradbury Handcock's 1st marriage was in Texas. His 2nd marriage was after Joseph Edd Hancock's birth. This fact alone can dismiss William Bradbury Handcock as Joseph Edd's father. * Conclusions/adjustments on parentage : * To delete the name of William Bradbury Handcock as Mr. John Edd Hancock's father * Leave all siblings linked through mother, Mary Jane Brock Hancock , until such time that a grave for William M. Hancock is located. * There appears to be no link (without further research) between William M. Hancock and William Bradbury Handcock. * * * WIVES * There seem to be TWO women with very similar names involved here: * Elizabeth Ann Cook (1890-1971) * She married John Edd Hancock on 7/04/1909. * Her parents were Allen Jackson Cook and Martha Jane Clayton. * Elizabeth Ann Cook Hancock is buried at Sweetwater Cemetery w/John Edd Hancock with similar stones. * "Lizzie Cook" (AKA Eliza Jane Cook Handcock), 1863-1945 * Her husband was William Bradbury Handcock (1854-1940). * They were married in 1891 or 1896 in Texas (Mr. Handcock's 2nd wife). * Her parents were William W. Cook and Mary Ellen Adkinson. * Lizzie Cook is buried with William Bradbury Handcock (double stone) at Greenwood Memorial Park in Ft. Worth. * Conclusions on Cook ladies : * Elizabeth Ann Cook Hancock is John Edd Hancock's wife * Eliza Jane Cook Handcock is wife of William Bradbury Handcock * There appears to be no relation (without further research) between either of the Cook ladies OR the Hancock/Handcock men. * * * Research by Janie Davis (Contributor #46586213) - March 7, 2020 * * *
