Mary Samek was born in 1908 to Frank M Samek and Mary B Kozisek Samek in Saunders County, Nebraska, USA, near Prague. She later lived with her family in Brainard, Butler County, Nebraska, USA. She was a graduate of Brainard High School. She became a novice with the Sisters of Notre Dame at the Mother House in Florence, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA, in September, 1928. She took her vows sometime in 1934. She began her novitiate as a seamstress and then began her teaching in St. Adelbert’s School on Hanscomb Blvd. Sister Samek was provincial superior for 12 years, superintendent of buildings and grounds and a frequent delegate to the Order’s international meetings in Czechoslovakia. She died at Bergan-Mercy Hospital, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA, on April 2, 1983. A Mass of the Resurrection was held in the Notre Dame Chapel, 3501 State Street, Omaha, on April 6, 1983. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha. Sister Samek is survived by two sisters, Rose Vrbka of Brainard, Butler County, Nebraska, USA, and Luclle Havlovic of David City, Butler County, Nebraska, USA. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Louis L Samek (1909-1981), James C Samek (1914-1981).
