Bio

Mark Williams, one of nine children born to Gabriel and Susan Williams, was born in Shelby county, Indiana, November 2, 1836, and died at Osceola, Iowa, July 11, 1917, aged 80 years, 8 months and 9 days. On August 6, 1869, he was united in marriage with Martha Ann Overby, who departed from this life on July 30, 1874. To this union six children were born. The eldest, Oscar, died in infancy; Albert F. of Osceola, with whom his father was making his home at the time of his death, and had done so for twenty years; Maggie Jane was the third child and will be remembered by her friends as Mrs. Ebert Paul; then came Arthilla, Edward and Clark. Three sons, Albert, Edward and Clark, survive their father. On February 3, 1876, Mr. Williams was married to Catherine Saddoris, who died March 27, 1895. Besides the children above mentioned, of the immediate family, Mr. Williams leaves only one sister to mourn his loss. She is Mrs. Sara E. Shaver who was present at the funeral. Besides these he leaves twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. Mr. Williams came to Clarke county in the spring of 1873, locating in Washington township where he resided until he began making his home with his son, Albert, as above mentioned. Death came as the result of six weeks of sickness, near the beginning of which he lost the sight of first one and then the other eye. This was followed by a paralysis of speech. During all the days of sickness he manifested great cheerfulness of spirit, singing and humming his favorite songs which were "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul." "Death, the consoler," had quieted a suffering soul, we would not change providence if we might in the hour of death Cooper's trust is our faith. "Judge not the Lord be feeble sense, But trust Him for His grace; Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face." Funeral services were conducted from the Christain church Friday afternoon, Rev. LeRoy Munyon officiating. Interment was made in Maple Hill Cemetery.
