Bio

Dates are approximate. John died before 4 January 1865 while serving in the War Between the States. He was a Private in Co. K, 14th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, and had enlisted 24 May 1861 at Corinth, Mississippi. He was wounded at the Battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee, 14 February 1862, and was discharged. He reenlisted again 31 March 1862 at Columbus, Mississippi. This Company was attached to the 43rd Regiment Mississippi Volunteers. He was captured when the company surrendered 4 July 1863 to Federal Forces at Vicksburg. He was paroled. He was appointed Corporal 22 March 1864, by order of Col. R. Harrison. John was killed at Decatur, Alabama. He left a will dated 4 January 1864 in Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi. He left his inheritance to his sister, Eliza Rebecca McCown. It is not known where he was buried. John never married.
