Bio

Fort Bend Herald, July 1, 2010: Walter Tappe Sr., 82 departed peacefully the morning of June 30, 2010. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, at Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors Chapel, 1201 Fourth St. in Rosenberg, with Pastor Claude Villemaire officiating. A private family burial will follow. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, July 2, at Garmany & Carden Chapel, for the one hour preceding the funeral services. Walter was born Nov. 16, 1927 in William Penn to Henry and Katie Tappe. His family moved to Rosenberg, when he was a young boy. He enlisted in the Texas National Guard at age 16, and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for two years at the end of World War II. In 1950, he met the love of his life, Ruth, while she was working at the local drive-in. They married Nov. 30, 1950, and had five children. He was employed as a lineman with Houston Lighting & Power, retiring as a crew leader after 39 years of service. Throughout his life, Walter worked hard to provide for his family, and in doing so became a role model for his children to follow. He enjoyed all that he did, including boating, fishing, barbequeing, gardening and camping. The family get-togethers were his greatest pleasures. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Katie Tappe; older brother, Herbert Tappe; and older sisters, Louise Addicks, Leona LaRosa, and Dorothy Bingham. He is survived by his oldest sister, Martha Ray; his loving, loyal wife of almost 60 years, Ethel Ruth; five children, Walter Tappe Jr., Lynn DiGiovanni, Trudy Zaruba, Glenn Tappe, and Wayne Tappe; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The pallbearers are eight of his 10 grandchildren, Tara Hansbrough, Jason Zaruba, Bret DiGiovanni, Walter Tappe III, Christine Zaruba, Tracie DiGiovanni, Ashley Jones, and Mason Tappe. Honorary pallbearers are his other two grandchildren, Caylee and Katie Tappe. Memorial donations may be given in Walter's memory to one's charity of choice. Condolence messages may be written for the Tappe family at www.garmanycarden.com. Services are under the direction of Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors, 1201 Fourth St. in Rosenberg, 281-342-4671. The time spent and memories shared with him will always be treasured. It was truly an honor and a privilege to have had him as a husband, father, and grandfather. He will truly be missed.
