Herald & Review 12/10/2014 DECATUR -- Madeline Mae Helm 99, of Decatur passed away at St. Marys hospital and went to be with the lord on December 6, 2014. She will be buried at Camp Butler with private services on Friday. Madeline was born in Altamont, Illinois, May 20, 1915 the daughter of Truman S and Rena (Krohn) Ray. Upon graduating from Decatur High she married Cleat Helm, April 21, 1935 in Decatur and they had one son Richard. During WWII she worked at the ammunition plant in Illiopolis,. She also worked at A.E. Staleys , managed Scoville Clubhouse and retired from Muellers. Upon retirement they moved to Hawaii, then Colorado where her husband passed away January 11, 2001. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Willard and Louis Ray. Surviving are her son Richard, Alabama, Grandchildren, Todd Helm, Texas and Leslie Deppe, Colorado, brother, Rolland Ray and wife Grace, four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. “Maddie” was a free spirited, strong willed woman that worked hard, enjoyed people and treasured life to the fullest. In her later years playing bingo and winning prizes was the highlight of her day. Her nieces Shelly, Elizabeth and Janet were a great help to her during her last years. She also leaves her friend Marla Russell who she considered part of her family. Obituary written by family members.
