Matador Tribune Thurs, September 15, 1955 An aircraft accident in the Okinawa area of the Pacific Ocean on Thurs, September 8,1955 claimed the life of Sgt. Leroy Nelson at 32 yrs. of age. Leroy Nelson was born in Matador on February 6, 1923 to Lee Andrew & Alice Nelson. He graduated from Matador High School in 1941. While employed by the Douglas Aircraft Corp in Santa Monica, CA, he voluntarily enlisted in the Army Air Corp in Sept. 1942. After gunnery school, he was assigned to a combat crew and sent overseas in July 1943. Lee Roy returned from overseas duty in 1944 and married Miss Bobbie Lee Amick of Flomot, TX on May 17, 1944. They had four children: Tommy, Michael, Neal and Deborah. After being discharged from the service in October 1945, he attended Baylor University for 18 months. He then re-entered the U.S. Air Force in January 1948 and was sent overseas to Okinawa, Japan in August 1954. He had been serving with the 581st Air Re-Supply Squadron. He was preceded in death by his son Tommy. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie and children: Michael (9), Neal (5) and Deborah (3); his parents Mr. & Mrs. Lee Andrew Nelson; and his sisters: Mrs. Earl (Wanda) Vaughn, Mrs. Bob (Glenda) Brock, and Mrs. John (Berndena) Harris. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Sgt. Nelson's death was reported with the loss of a B-29 bomber which crashed in the Pacific 250 mi. from Okinawa on Thursday night, and was later confirmed by official information. The airman's wife and his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Lee Nelson received identical telegrams late Friday announcing he was missing. On Sunday, they received identical telegrams from Washington confirming his death. The telegrams were signed by Major General R.J. Reeves, director of military personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. Thirteen men were reported lost in the bomber crash. Excerpts from the telegrams are as follows: "It is with deep regret that I officially inform you of the death of Technical Sergeant Leroy Nelson. He died on 8 September 1955 in the Okinawa area of the Pacific Ocean as the result of an aircraft accident. A letter containing further details will follow. Please accept my sincere sympathy in this hour of grief." Sgt. Nelson, a tail gunner in WWII, was serving as a flight engineer since re-entering the service on January 8, 1948.
