Bio

Helen Marie Serbus was born on 10 September 1923, to William Henry “Bill” and Barbara Anna Korbel Serbus, in Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota. Helen married Benjamin Stephen “Ben” Shubert, the son of Frank and Theresa “Tracy” Wolf Shubert, on 06 June 1943, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bechyn. After their marriage, Helen and Ben settled on a farm seven miles south of Danube. This was their home for seven years when they moved to their farm northwest of Olivia. Helen was an active member of the English Rosary Society and several other organizations in the Olivia area. Helen Marie Serbus Shubert, of Olivia, Minnesota, died at the age of 49 on Friday, 05 January 1973, at the Masonic Memorial Hospital, University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Helen was survived by her husband, Ben; five children, Renee of Olivia, Barbara (Jerome) Fischer of Morton, Richard (Marcia) Shubert of Anoka, Marie (Richard) Harter of Anoka, and Margaret (Mike) Kelly of Blaine; and, seven grandchildren, Lisa, Michelle, Chad, and Brad Fischer, Tami and Mark Shubert, and Jason Kelly. Also surviving were Helen’s parents, William and Barbara Serbus, Sr., brother, William Serbus, Jr., and sister, Rose Aschenbrenner of Seattle, Washington. Helen was preceded in death by two infant children. The funeral service for Helen was held on Monday, 08 January 1973, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia; the Reverend Ralph Hayden officiated. Interment followed in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Olivia, Renville County, Minnesota. Pallbearers were Lawrence Rothmeier, Leo Koll, Albin Mages, Howard Mertz, Vernon Kaufenberg, and Earl Paulsen.
