Columbus Telegram - Sept. 12, 2005 COLUMBUS - Martin Shemek, 80, of Columbus, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Duncan, with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post No. 84 Honor Guard, with the Rev. Frank Jindra officiating. Mr. Shemek was born September 20, 1924, in Osceola, to Louis and Stacia Shemek. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Osceola High School. He entered the United States Army on December 21, 1944, and served until December 5, 1946. He served in the Philippine Islands. He returned to the Columbus area where he worked at Henke Manufacturing and at Wayne Feeds. He married Dorothy Niedzwiecki. In 2002 He entered the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3704 and American Legion Hartman Post #84. He served on the American Legion Hartman Post Honor Guard and was a past recipient of the Keith Byran Award. Survivors include three sons, Eric (Corinne) Shemek of Duncan, and Dave and Terry Shemek, both of Columbus; three brothers, Alois, Albert and Gene Shemek, all of Texas, three sisters, Helen Shemek of Omaha, Leona Schreiner of Hastings, and Christine (Al) Dolezal of Columbus.
