John Jordan Morris was born in March 1833 in South Carolina. He fought in the civil war with Co. B 1st Battalion Mississippi Sharpshooters. His wife Mary E. was born 11 December 1837 in Alabama and died 20 July 1879. According to the 1870 census, the couple had five children including William J., Ann, James, Mary and Laura. His nephew Frances Morris was living with the family at that time. By the 1880 census, only John and his daughter Mary Elizabeth (Betty) were living in Mississippi. He later married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Shuttlesworth and the couple moved to Texas along with Lizzie's son Ralph.
