The Haddam Clipper, November 1944 The community was shocked Monday by the sudden passing of one of its good citizens, John Chop. Mr. Chop and been up town Monday morning and had gotten his mail and returned to his home in the east part of town. Mr. Chop sat down to read his paper about eleven o'clock, when he suddenly suffered a stroke. He passed away at five o'clock in the afternoon. John Chop, son of Frank and Johanna Chop, was born November 1, 1870, in Radkov, Providence of Tabor, Czechoslovakia. In 1874 He with his parents, emigrated to America, coming to Waterville, Kansas, by rail and then by stage coach to the Prairie Home Post Office north of Cuba, Kansas. They settled on a farm 5 miles north of Cuba, KS. As a boy and young man he endured the hardships of pioneer life. On May 27, 1893, he was married to Anna Slavik whose companionship he enjoyed for over 51 years. He was the father of five children, Viola, who died at the age of 5 years, Elsie, Frank, Ernest, and Grace. After their marriage they established a home on a farm north of Cuba, KS., then in 1897 moved to a farm near Blackwell, Oklahoma. In 1910 they moved to a farm near Washington, KS., and in 1912 located on a farm near Haddam, KS. where they lived until 1943 when they moved into Haddam, where on November 27, 1944 he passed away, at the age of 74 years and 27 days. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Frank and Ernest both of Haddam, KS.; two daughters, Elsie Novak of Haddam, KS. and Grace Huncovsky of Narka, KS.; three grandsons, Edwin Novak in Army services in the Philippines, Robert Novak in Army services in France and George Novak of Haddam, KS.; a sister Mary Marsicek of Narka, KS. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Haddam Methodist church conducted by Rev. J. P. Snare, and interment was made in (Kasha) National Cemetery near Narka, Kansas
