Bio

George Alexander White was born in 1841 in Panola County, MS. [Note: The death certificate and tombstone indicate he was born in 1835; however, he is not yet born in the 1840 census and he is listed as being 10 years old in the 1850 census]. He was the only child of Samuel Benjamin White and Martha Jones. They sent him to a Military Academy in Mississippi which provided him with an excellent education. The family moved to Texas with a land grant on the Pedernales River near Johnson City, Blanco Co, TX. George moved to Gonzales Co, TX where he met Margaret Jane Davis. They were married on 19 November 1857 in Gonzales Co, TX. George and Margaret were the parents of: Samuel Green White, Laura Jane White (Hodges), Robert William White, Susan May White (Griffith), Grace Ann Rayburn Davis White (Menard Britigan Grider), Martha "Mattie" Marcellus White (Akins), Jefferson Elexander White, Margaret Josephine White (Cole), Henry White Abt. 1875, and Annie Mae White Abt. 1878. George joined the Confederate States of America as a mechanic. He served in Capt. Catchling's Company, Cook's Battalion, Company H, 1st Texas Heavy Infantry. About 1875, Margaret and George moved their family to Beaumont, Jefferson Co, TX where George was hired as a construction engineer and built Beaumont's first sawmill. Margaret died in 1878, probably from complications of childbirth. She was buried in the Beaumont area with her daughter, Annie Mae. The exact date of Margaret's death and location of the burial are unknown. After Margaret died, George moved the children to Galveston, TX and continued to work on the mills. The three oldest children had already moved to Louisiana. Susan, about 13 years old, became mother and father to Grace, Mattie, Jeff, and Josephine. They had a baby brother, Henry, who was about four years old when he got a nail stuck in his foot and died from sepsis or tetanus. The children never got over losing their baby brother. George subsequently met widow Mary Moore Green. They were married on 23 Jul 1885 in Hardin Co, TX. George and Mary were the parents of: Cecilia "Celia" White. According to the 1900 census, Mary had resumed using the surname Green and was living with Celia in Hardin County, TX. Where George was living in 1900 is unknown. By 1910, George was living with daughter Susan and her husband, Houison Griffith, in Calcasieu Pa, LA. George later decided to move to Jeff's home in Beaumont, Jefferson Co, TX. Jeff had married Edith Baird and her father, a former Union soldier, was also living there. George refused to live with a "Yankee" so Jeff built him a little house in back of his home on Magnolia Street. The grandchildren remembered him as a "mean old man who was drunk most of the time." They were told to stay away from him and speak only when spoken to. George got so out of control that Jeff couldn't handle him. On May 14, 1913, Susan, Jeff, and Mattie arranged for him to enter the Texas Confederate Home in Austin, Travis Co, TX, which had been established for disabled and indigent Confederate veterans. Mr. White, 78, died on August 7, 1913 at the Texas Confederate Home. He was preceded in death by his first wife Margaret Jane, son Henry, and daughter Annie Mae. Survivors included sons Sam, Bob, and Jeff White; daughters Laura Hodges, Susan Griffith, Grace Grider, Mattie Akins, Josephine Cole, Celia Como; and second wife, Mary Green White. Children Jeff and Susan were in attendance for the funeral. As a Confederate veteran, Mr. White was eligible for burial in the Texas State Cemetery. ________________________________________ Note: A family history written by Carmel Estaville Richey listed his middle name as Armstrong. That is incorrect. She was thinking of George Armstrong Custer.
