Bio

Margaret Jane Davis was the daughter of Jane Porter Rayburn and John Henry Davis. She was born about 1839 in Fayette Co, AL. Her father died when she was a baby and her mother moved to Tennessee where she had relatives. Her mother, Jane, married John H. Pruitt about 1841. By 1846, the family had relocated to Mississippi, where Margaret spent the majority of her childhood. Around 1855, they moved to Gonzales Co, TX where Margaret met George A. White from Mississippi. They were married on 19 November 1857. George and Margaret were the parents of: Samuel Green White, Laura Jane White (Hodges), Robert William White, Susan Marie White (Griffith), Grace Ann Rayburn Davis White (Menard Brittigan Grider), Martha "Mattie" Marcellus White (Akins), Jefferson Elexander White, Margaret Josephine White (Cole), Henry White Abt. 1875, and Annie Mae White Abt. 1878. After the War Between the States, Margaret and George moved their family to Beaumont, Jefferson Co, TX where George was hired as a construction engineer and built Beaumont's first sawmill. About 1878, Margaret died, probably from complications of childbirth. She was buried in the Beaumont area with her daughter, Annie Mae. The exact date of Margaret's death and location of the burial are unknown. George subsequently met widow Mary "Molly" Moore Green and had a daughter, Cecilia "Celia" White. NOTES:1) Margaret Jane Davis signed her name as Margaret on her wedding certificate; however, she was also known as Mary, Annie, and Josephine 2) Family correspondence indicates that Margaret Jane Davis was a first cousin of CSA President Jefferson Davis. Since he had NO first cousins, this cannot be true. In addition, the names of all of his second cousins are known. As a result, the closest relation she could be is of the third degree I participated in The Genographic Project. Testing indicates I am a member of the K1c1b mitochondrial DNA haplogroup, as was Oetzi--The Iceman. I am Margaret Jane's great great granddaughter (direct female lineal descendant). Thus, Margaret Jane Davis was also a member of the K1c1b mitochondrial DNA group.
