Married Joseph Vomacka on January 21, 1896 at Assumption Catholic Church, South Omaha, Nebr. According to her burial card she died September 26, 1897, age 20 years, and was buried September 27 following services at Assumption Catholic Church. Evening World-Herald (Omaha, Nebr.), September 27, 1897, p. 3, col. 4 Mrs. Joseph Vomacka So Badly Burned That She Dies in Twelve Hours. Lamp Was Jarred From the Machine on Which She Was Sewing Late at Night. Blaze Enveloped Her Instantly, and Husband Scorched His Hands in Saving His Wife's Life. Mrs. Vomacka, wife of Joseph Vomacka, Nineteenth and T streets, was so badly burned late Saturday night that she died from her injuries yesterday. It was 1 o'clock in the morning, and she was yet busily at work on her sewing machine with a lighted lamp standing on the end. By either the jarring of the machine or an accidental pull of the garment upon which she was working, the lamp fell to the floor and was crushed. The oil was dashed upon her clothing, a light wrapper, and in an instant she was a blazing torch. Her husband responded to her cries for help, and in smothering the flames burned his own hands to blisters. Ere he had succeeded his wife was burned from head to foot, so that cakes of flesh dropped from her body, and the muscles of her arms and upper portion of her body were contracted till immovable. Dr. McCrann was at once called, but he found that nothing could be done save to alleviate the terrible suffering till death should ensue, which occurred yesterday morning. Mrs. Vomacka was a bright young married woman about 20 years of age, and leaves no children, but numerous relatives in this city and Grand Island. Her father is John Vaura [ sic ]. The dead woman was a dressmaker, and was working late to keep her promise to have a wedding dress finished by 8 o'clock Sunday morning at the time of the accident. The funeral was held at 3 o'clock this afternoon, services being held at St. Mary's Bohemian Catholic church, and interment being at St. Mary's cemetery. '''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), October 1, 1897, p. 5, col. 5 The newspaper reprinted the World-Herald obituary and added the following: The deceased was a sister of Mrs. Houska of this city. Mrs. Houska was notified by telegraph and went to Omaha Monday and attended the funeral.
