Bio

Maria Sophia (née Richert or Reuchert) Nicolai was born April 5, 1838 in Rossdorf, Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany to Johann George & Maria Margaretha (née Trupel) Richert. On September 30, 1860 she married Johann "John" Friedrich Nicolai in Rossdorf, Hessen, Dramstadt, Germany. Johann Friedrich Nicolai came to United States with his wife, Maria Sophia Richert, 3 of his daughters and 2 of his sons in 1866 on the maiden voyage of the SS Deutschland 1866, from Bremen, Germany via Southampton, England to New York. The family was from Rossdorf, Germany and left Germany 10/14/1866 and arrived in New York 10/29/1866. The family settled in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania, moved to Sutton, Nebraska in 1879 and finally settled in Curtis, Nebraska 1885. Johann Friedrich passed away while he and wife were visiting a daughter in Pittsburgh. They had 13 children, 3 died in infancy. He was born October 11, 1838 in Rossdorf, Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany to George Heinrich (born November 24, 1811) & Anna Elizabeth (born August 18, 1815 (née Hein or Heyn) Nicolai. Maria Sophia Nicolai is buried in the Curtis Cemetery in Curtis, NE with only the following on her grave marker - Wife of J.F. Nicolai born April 5, 1838 & died May 15, 1914.
