Grand Island Daily Independent Monday 4 January 1943 Rites for Mrs. Henry Schaaf, Sr., Tuesday Member of One of Hall Counties Pioneer Families Dies Saturday Mrs. Tina Schaaf, wife of Henry Schaaf, Sr., and a member of one of Hall county's pioneer families, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. August Schaaf, 3 1/2 miles east of the city, shortly after 7 o'clock Saturday evening, Mrs. Schaaf had been in failing health for two years and had been seriously ill five weeks. Death was attributed to pneumonia. Funeral rites will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Livingston-Sonderman funeral home. The Rev. C. H. Goede, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, will conduct the services. Interment will be in the family space in Grand Island cemetery. Mrs. Schaaf, nee Tina Lilienthal, was born in Hall county Feb. 2, 1873, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lilienthal. When she was six years old, the Lilienthal family moved to Merrick county, where Tina Lilienthal attained young womanhood. In this city, on April 25, 1891, Miss Tina Lilienthal married Henry Schaaf and they went immediately to their farm, three miles east of the city, to establish their home. They were successful in their farming enterprises and retired to their comfortable home in this city 10 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Schaaf enjoyed good health when they observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1941. Failing health caused Mr. and Mrs. Schaaf to close their home and go to reside with Mr. Schaaf's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. August Schaaf, on their farm east of the city, five weeks ago. Mrs. Schaaf was baptized in the Lutheran faith. Surviving besides her husband are a son, Henry Schaaf, Jr., of this community; a brother, Henry Lilienthal, also of this city; a sister, Mrs. William Wiese, Cairo; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Lillie Strattman, two brothers, Detlef and William Lilienthal, and an infant sister. Visitation hours will be from 7 to 9 o'clock this evening in the Livingston-Sonderman funeral home.
