Kokes, a well known farmer-rancher and lifetime resident of Valley County, was born May 16, 1911 on the family farm north of Ord to John E. Sr., and Barbara Petska Kokes and died August 19, 1979 at the Valley county Hospital in Ord at the age of 68. John grew to manhood on the family farm where he attended school at the Plain Valley rural school district. He later attended the St. Paul Business College at St. Paul. John was united in marriage to Alice Adamek October 3, 1939. During his more than 40 years of farming he carried on a tradition established by his father, John Kokes Sr., of modern, efficient farming and ranching practices. He developed a diversified farming operation of primarily corn, alfalfa and prairie hay which supplied the feed for a cow-calf operation and feeder cattle. He shipped steers to the Omaha Stockyards for over 40 years and had one of the oldest established commercial Hereford cow herds in Valley County. John's wife, Alice, died in 1942. On October 9, 1947, John was united in marriage to Clara Konkoleski at Grand Island. They made their home on the family farm. His long-time interest in Valley County and the Ord community was evidenced by his involvement in many organizations and projects such as the paving of Highway 70 northeast of Ord, and the building committee of the Ord Catholic Church. John was one of the organization directors for the Loup Valleys Rural Public Power District and served on the board for over 30 years. He was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Parish, the Knights of Columbus, the Ord Elks Lodge #2371, the Nebraska Stock Growers Association, served on the Plain Valley School Board for many years, the Ord Coop board of Directors, the Mason State Bank Board of Directors at Mason City, and was Chairman of the Board of the Kokes Corporation.
