Published in the Ord Quiz, Ord, Nebraska, Wednesday, April 23, 2008, Page 8A, Column 2 “Bud” Kokes World War II Veteran – Lincoln, NE Resident, 88 Emanuel Raymond “Bud” Kokes, 88, died Apr. 15, 2008 in Lincoln, Nebraska Funeral Mass was at 10:30 am on Sat., Apr. 19 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilber, NE. Burial was in the Wilber Czech Cemetery. Kuncl Funeral Home of Crete/Wilber was in charge of arrangements. Bud was born Feb. 27, 1920 in Valley County, NE to John and Barbara (Petska) Kokes. He grew up one of 16 children on the family farm. He graduated from Ord High School in 1939. He joined the army as a Medic Admin. Specialist in October 1941 and began his basic training at Camp Grant, IL., transferring to Fort Geo Wright Medical Hospital Training, the 39th Bomb Group at Gieger Field in Spokane, WA and the 380 Bomb Group in Tucson, AZ. Other bases included Bigg Field in El Paso, TX, Lowery Field in Denver, CO, and Fort Stoklin, CA. His unit shipped out of San Francisco April 1942, for Sidney, Australia, New Guinea, Northern Solomons, Bismarck Archipelago, Luzon, and Southern Philippines. He returned to the United States where he was honorable discharged in October 1945. Bud attended Milford Trade School in Milford where he met LaVerna Paul. They were married Feb. 26, 1949 and returned to Ord, NE where he farmed for the next 37 years enjoying the solitude of the Sandhills. Bud was an active member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Ericson, NE. He retired from farming in 1986 and sold the farm, moving to Clatonia, NE where he was a volunteer with the fire department, active in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilber and the American Legion Club in Wilber. He worked part-time for the local grain elevator in Clatonia. From 1986 through 1992, he and his wife spent the summers working part-time near Estes Park, CO. Survivors include his wife of Lincoln; four children, Jean (Steve) Brozek, Lincoln, Peggy Gordon, Chester, VA, Marilyn (Lloyd) Liebetrau, Lakewood, Co and Paul (Tamara) Kokes, Leander, TX; seven grandchildren, two sisters, Mickey Briggs of Orlando, FL, Betty Wornell of Tacoma, WA and two brothers, Ted Kokes of Boise, ID and Dick Kokes, Hemet, CA.
