Memorial services were held March 27 at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with inurnment in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Kokes was born May 10, 1911 west of Ord in Valley county to Frank and Elizabeth (Novotny) Kokes. He attended the Dist. 26 rural school. He lived on the farm where he was born until 1962 when he moved into Ord. Mr. Kokes had served as a two term Nebraska State Senator of the 41st District from 1965-1973. He was a member of a number of other organizations and boards and elected offices. They include the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic church; the Knights of Columbus, eight years as a school board member of Dist. 26, six years with the Farmers Home Administration; four years on the Valley County ASC Committee, four years a member of the Lower Loup NRD Board, four years on the State Resources Commission. In 1978 he received the AkSarBen Good Neighbor Award and the Sportsman of the Year Award. Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Ord; two sons, Reggie Kokes of Casper, Wyo., and Ronald Kokes of Clovis, Calif., a daughter, Ruth Kokes of Bakersfield, Calif.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Tony Kokes of Chicago, Ill. He was preceded in death by two wives, Martha (Zulkoski) Kokes in 1940; Clara (Silver) Kokes in 1984; one son, Harold Kokes while serving at the American Embassy on the Island of Cypress; one infant daughter; two brothers, Joseph and Frank; and a sister Agnes Komsak.
