Bio

ORD - Ruth I. Kokes, 101 years, 11 months, 22 days, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at Valley View Living Center. Mrs. Kokes' wishes were to be cremated. Private inurnment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Ruth was born March 5, 1911, to Leslie J. and Myrtle (Barker) Benson at Ord. She received her education in Ord and graduated from Ord High School in 1929. She continued her education and graduated from Grand Island Business College and was employed by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce. In 1936, Ruth married Henry C. Bach, former Grand Island City Treasurer and businessman. Mr. Bach passed away in 1982. In 1985, Ruth married long time friend, Rudolph C. Kokes of Ord, a former Nebraska State Senator. The Kokes' made their home in Ord. Mr. Kokes passed away in 1995. For many years Ruth was active in Daughters of the Nile and Elk's Does, serving as the Worthy Matron of both Grand Island and Ord Does chapters. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and playing bridge, pitch and cribbage. Survivors include a stepson, Reggie Kokes of Casper, Wyo.; stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, three brothers, six sisters, and nieces and nephews. Published in The Grand Island Independent on March 1, 2013
