Son of Frank and Kathryn "Katie" ?Kryskor Novotny A son, by Alzbeta, Josef (b.~1876 IA, d.<1880 IA) ------------------------------------- Last Rites Held For Mike Novotny Pioneer, Who Helped Build Geranium church; Laid to Rest Tuesday The thinning ranks of the early day settlers of Valley county lost one of their oldest members when Mike Novotny died in his home in the northwest part of Ord Sunday. Mr. Novotny was 91 years old. He played a leading role in developing Valley county and helped build the Geranium church. Mr. Novotny hauled part of the lumber of which the church was made, from St. Paul. He took an active part in the enterprises which would help his community progress and was known as a fine, substantial citizen, being respected by all who knew him. Funeral services were conducted in Our Lady of Perpetual Help church Tuesday morning by Father Michael Scyczny. Father Thomas Sludowski furnished the music. Interment was made in the Ord Catholic cemetery. Mr. Novotny was born in the village of Precise, Czechoslovakia Feb. 5, 1855 and lived to attain the age of 91 years, 2 months and 9 days. When he was thirteen he came to America with his parents who settled at Protivin, Iowa where he worked on a farm. When he was twenty years old he married Miss Elizabeth Lukes in Iowa. Nine children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. In 1881 Mr. and Mrs. Novotny came to Valley county and settled on a farm eleven miles west of Ord. Mrs. Novotny died Oct. 7, 1890. Four years later Mr. Novotny married Miss Josephine Horak. This union was blessed with two children. After many years of hard labor and having established a wide reputation as successful farmers, Mr. and Mrs. Novotny retired and moved to Ord in 1918 where they resided until his death. He leaves his widow and seven children, who are: Mrs. Frank Kokes of Ord, Mrs. Anna Parkos of Kimball, Frank Novotny of Dix, Mrs. James Rybin of Elyria, John Novotny of Dix, Anton Novotny of Elyria, and Mrs. James Petska of Ord. Another son, Joseph, died a year ago at Kimball. Mr. Novotny is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Frank Kalishek of Protivin, Ia., and seventeen grandchildren. He was a member of the Woodman Lodge.
